Morgan-if you are really tired of owning it-why not sell to Mike G, or Greg K? You might not get exactly the amount you want, but you would get 100K +, and the headache of owning the course would be over. So many players love the course, and others envy your position-many people have a dream of doing what you did. I guess for you the dream has become a nightmare.
Screw what people say about Bob Enman-course owners-until players play the courses in Maine-P2P. They won't understand what those courses offer etc, and why they charge $3-5 a round. _________________ Scoontars Disc Golf Art Store is now Open on Facebook

| Never said nightmare. Just not into it anymore. I'd rather see Spa Park be open in a public park than to have to keep fronting for everybody myself. |

Hey Will the awning turned out great, thanks for the help!
You didn't know whether you wanted to adopt hole 5 or 6 but the Rocchio bros adopted 5 so I guess you have 6. Scoontar previously adopted 6 but I guess you have to fight over it, there isn't much maintenance to do on 6 anyway.
Thanks again! |

John Sunkenberg contacted Michael from the Saratoga Spa State Park and this is where it stands.......
Spoke to Michael yesterday. Here is the deal:
The course is in the master plan. The master plan is in Albany awaiting signatures. These signatures are expected to be in place within the next 45 days. At this point the park has zero funding due to the NY state economy. Once the master plan is in place they will have to secure funds for such a project. That outlook is bleak for 2010.
Here is what we can do:
If we can secure outside funds between now and the spring, the park will offer labor to help install the course. They have state employees that work for the park that would be available for such a project. This would include dump trucks, concrete mixers and other equipment owned by the park.
I say we try to establish funding for an initial 9 holes with proposed expansion for 18. It seems with the park labor on board we may be able to hack some big pines behind the pool to make that a viable fairway to tie the courses together. When 18 happens, we add a few holes early on in the course, add like 4-6 down the hill and mix one in on the field and we are there.
At Warwick we sold individual sponsorships for each hole of $400. They used Mach 3s which are a premium basket. Those DB 5s look like a decent basket actually…have you used them?
If we go that route I think we could raise some money for these. I could probably get my company to buy a few baskets. I would buy one or two myself. I think this is what we need to do if we want to play golf in spa park next year. We could either buy signs or make them to get started. Unfortunately this is not what would be ideal but would get the course going. At that point I think the interest will peak and 18 will happen shortly thereafter. I am going to speak to Skidmore administration to see if they want to sponsor the course. Their athletic dept could then use the course for clubs or rec courses. If they buy into it, a couple grand would be a drop in the bucket for them I would assume. With all the businesses around Saratoga I think I could come up with some funding fairly easily.
So that is where this is at. What do you think of Discap’s involvement? Could we do a fundraiser somehow, maybe an ice bowl with an entrance fee as a raise funds for spa park course tournament. I could come up with two baskets maybe two more. I may buy a couple of those DB 5s for my private course at the lake so we could use those.
All in all I think we wait until the master plan is signed then we start moving on some plans. You interested?
John
I told John about the DB-5's so that he'd have options as far as the baskets go. I told him to come by J-Park sometime to check out our 27-chain versions.
I also mentioned that raising funds via the Ice Bowl is not an option because we're already committed to the CHOICES Program.
Would the DisCap Club Fund be an option for a hole sponsorship? I know we don't have much, but if John was to use DB-5's I'd think we could easily fund a basket and the materials(sleeve, lock & cement) to plant it. _________________ "Captain Anhyzer"

I know we don't have much $$
but if John was to use DB-5's
I'd think we could easily fund
a basket and the material to plant it.
And you can tell everybody that
this is your Disc Golf course
it may be quite simple
but now that it's done
I say we donate
I say we donate
I say we donate to the course
How wonderful life is
while your in the world _________________ Scoontars Disc Golf Art Store is now Open on Facebook

So this is John Sunkenberg, Jeff steered me toward this site. Good to see that there is some interest and thought in this project. Hope to meet this group soon. Anyway living across from Spa park has given me some obvious motivation in this. I have a picture of the overhead view of the area for the course with a tenative layout. I need to play around to figure out how to post it on this site for people to look at (maybe someone could give me a tip) Reality is the course would be fairly simple to install in this area of the park. As far as design goes I am not looking to do this without any input from the area golfers as we all are going to be the ones to play it. From a design standpoint I generally prefer holes where you can get out of the box with a decent chuck vs. poke and a prayer. This area offers a real natural area for this style of disc golf without much effort. There are many other areas in the park that will allow a private area for a course intertwining with streams and elevation but will require much cutting, so I guess it depends on the level of labor help we have and leeway. Personally I say we get a course in and start playing ASAP. The key to working with spa park will be a balance between the course and the cross country trails and the picnic areas. I have walked this countless times in all times of the year and have a pretty good handle on what would work.
So to wrap up this long post, let's figure out what we have for baskets and get this thing moving. I have a meeting with the Park Director after the new year and hopefully at that time he has the master plan signed and we can get moving.
btw my thought about Skidmore is probably a bad idea after I read in yesterday's Times Union that they are laying off 73 staff employees, probably not looking for ways to spend money at this time.

If it's a .jpg file and you have a place online that you can upload to, posting pictures here is easy.
The site I use is www.discgolfscene.com
1. Create a free profile and there's an area to upload pictures.
2. Once the pictures are online, right click a picture and select "Properties".
3. Copy the URL address and paste it here.
4. Type after(no spaces). _________________ "Captain Anhyzer"

Word from an inside source @ parks and rec. (working with state contracts gives me inside scoop) Saratoga Spa Disc Golf Course pushed to way way back burner. NYS budget cuts suck. _________________ PDGA # 37696

I'm sure that with private sponsors and a well-planned work weekend the 9 hole course could be built. The planning would take some time, of course. I'm sure if there was something in a newspaper some of the wealthier Saratoga residents would jump at the chance to have their names on something in Saratoga Spa for what is a meager sum to them. How much does it cost for a 27-chain DB5, Cement for a tee pad and pin, and the collar to put it all together? If it's like $600, some wealthy resident would probably spring for it. NY State should have no problem allowing the course to be built if they don't have to put money into it. _________________ I have an American dream but it involves black masks and gasoline.

I agree The DisCap folks would be happy to design and install for free
baskets range from $175 to $300
If the Park is willing to let us install a course with private labor and funds, we would make it happen
The OK is the tough part
We're at least already part of the big plan which should help us greatly |
