If what we need is a polished course, there is enough new blood that is willing to get stuff done. I'm going to be at J-park saturday morning to try to get gravel to 19 & 20. If we get an idea where we are doing it, we can concentrate our labor there. _________________ I didn't attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it. -Mark Twain |

I agree with your whole post: 1 course, CPS or Joralemon. Having it at CPS within a year after the course is installed could generate more excitement. And hopefully more new courses. |

Jamesville and Oxbow are about the same distance apart as CPS and J-Park are. CNYDGA was able to pull off states at those courses in 2009 and the transition between the courses worked wonderfully.
Day one was two rounds at JVB. After day one play was over everybody headed over to Canastota. A block of rooms was reserved at a motel there and camping was available at Oxbow. The players party was held at Oxbow and started about 2 hours after play was completed at Jamesville. I had time to drive to Canastota, check in to my room, grab a quick shower and even a nap before heading to the party.
Everything worked well and I did not hear any complaints from any players. I think a CPS/J-Park State Championship could work tremendously.
Also, with all due respect to Kevin, I think J-Park is just as worthy of hosting a state championship as either of the Syracuse courses. This is not a shot at Oxbow or Jamesville. I very much enjoy traveling to play those courses and do so on a regular basis. I think your selling your baby short Kevin. Its a tremendous course as it is now and after another year - 16 months of TLC from all the devoted discappers it will shine as a state championship venue.
When can I register? |

^ Agreed on Oxbow, I like it but the J is better. Haven't played JVB so can't comment. BUT, everything Kevin said is right too. Oxbow (and I think JVB) have cement tee pads. That is a huge deal. For any other type of tee pad to compare, they have to be meticulous. Signage... ditto. Parking, bathrooms are also concerns. Hyzer Creek has all the same issues.
Two courses on the same day is not impossible, but I think it's a terrible idea (if more then 15 minutes). You have to worry about morons getting lost (if they're late for round 2 technically par +4 on each hole), parking at two places, getting everybody there for players meeting, and nature can always throw you curve balls too.
I'd like to see day one at Hyzer 18+18, Day two at J, 27+18. _________________ Walker

There is a reason the Jammer sold out in it's third year. J-Park is a special course. Yes, Oxbow and Jamesville have concrete tees but, correct me if I'm wrong, TC3 has hosted states in the past. IMHO, well groomed gravel tees are superior to the rubber tees at TC3. You guys had the tees in great shape at last years Jammer and I did not hear one complaint from a player regarding them.
As far as signage and bathrooms, they faced the same challenges at Oxbow last year with no significant issues. To address parking I would say there will be no need for any more parking then you had to accommodate for last year's Jammer unless you were going to raise the cap above 90 players.
I know I don't have a lot of tournament experience and certainly defer to the better judgment of the true experts, but I do know a thing or two about event planning and marketing. Discap has a premium, marketable asset at J-Park and players will come in droves to experience a state championship there. It may not have the polish and amenities of a true world class course but that is part of Joralemon's charm.
All I'm trying to say is if you host it they will come, and when they go home they will be singing the praises of J-Park and DisCap. |

Parking is not an issues at J park we can line the ballfield. Parking at any of the other couses might be an issue. Hyzer has the most limited space. Cps we could probably use the dogwalker parking area . _________________ PDGA # 37696

We had 55 at April Showers and the parking was pretty tight........ Hyzer is a favorite of many NYers but i'm thinking that 90 players cars would be a bit much. _________________ "Captain Anhyzer"

| if we did choose to use Hyzer i'm sure we could come up with a solution for the parking. let's not be to hasty in our decisions. |

The NY State Championships is just a C tier and lots of local non-world-class courses have held it. You don't need Winthrop Gold for it. Maybe for a B tier people should get all crazy about parking lots and stuff, but no need to worry about needing a Pebble Beach type facility for a C tier.
I'm putting concrete tee pads at Hyzer this year on most holes. Not on 12 or 15 but most of the others. All of a sudden there are safety issues at Hyzer Kevin? Why? What safety issues?
Parking at Hyzer is not an issue if the 4WD vehicles would stay out of the parking lot and stop treating their precious giant SUV's as if they would get scratched and ruin their turtle wax shine if a dandelion flower was too tall. Park the SUV's in the woods, there is 30 acres to park on. Why did you get a 4WD vehicle in the first place if you can't get mud on it? Grow a pair and park it in the woods.
Battle of Saratoga can move closer to Saratoga if the Spa Park course ever opens or if the Lock 5 course in Schuylerville or something. No reason to have it at Hyzer. But April Showers, that's Hyzer's baby. So if NY States was at Hyzer we could skip the battle one year or have it in Spa Park object course or something. Usually it's not a PDGA sanctioned event anyway.
Kevin stop knocking Hyzer. Good local course? Everybody comes from all over the country to play that local course. Half the cars in the lot every weekend have out-of-state plates. Local course? Give me a break. I think you're just jealous. |
